I was at Rover for 18 years working on the old ‘A’ series then in the new foundry working in the sand casting side as a team leader. This process was revolutionary in casting metal as it was cast from the bottom not the top. I later moved to Dalmuir for family reasons on suspensions till the end of Rover.
All my own family have been there too. My late father was in the old foundry working as a shop steward (my father-in-law was also his foreman), and were best of mates outside of work, which is how me and the wife met 32 years ago. My late brother worked in CABS, also my younger brother and sister-in-law worked in CABS and for a short time in seatbuild. Uncles and cousins both on my side of the family and my wife’s have worked in the plant over the years, so you can see how it played a big part of the employment side in our families.
